December 3rd, 2018 –
Recently, Concordia’s President has announcement his departure and we want to ensure that he signs this Collective Agreement before he moves on to Western University, where Exam Invigilators are paid $20 an hour.
TRAC (Teaching and Research Assistants at Concordia, PSAC local 12500) is launching a campaign to pressure Concordia to show up at the bargaining table at the next arbitration dates for Exam Invigilators on January 25th and February 1st, 2019.
On December 3rd, Concordia failed to show up for arbitration to negotiate a first Collective Agreement for Examination Invigilators. This was the second time in a row that Concordia has cancelled an arbitration date, the last being January 31st, 2018.
The bargaining process began on November 5th, 2015 and has yet to deliver a Collective Agreement to the membership.
Further delays are unacceptable, since hundreds of our invigilators are paid the minimum wage, with little job security and workplace protection. This is also a matter of equity, as Exam Invigilators in other Montreal Universities are paid significantly more. These members of the Concordia community play a vital role in ensuring the integrity of the examination process, and by extension, the integrity and reputation of the University.
Our demands are clear. We want a living wage, job security, health and safety protection and respect from the employer. We want Concordia to show up at the bargaining table. Failing to do so demonstrates a lack of respect for their workers. It has been 3 years since the bargaining process has begun. Other unions on campus are also similarly neglected, with CARE (Concordia Association of Research Employees) in its seventh year of bargaining.
The Teaching and Research Assistants at Concordia (TRAC) is a labour union local comprising the teaching assistants and research assistants at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebéc.
