COME PARTY IN SUPPORT OF EXAM INVIGILATORS. WE’VE BEEN BARGAINING FOR 3 YEARS, WITH THE MINIMUM WAGE AND MULTIPLE DELAYS FROM CONCORDIA. BUT HEY…WHO SAYS WE CAN’T HAVE FUN? ON THE MENU: MUSIC, COFFEE, SNACKS AND GOOD COMPANY.
Concordia President Alan Shepard announced his upcoming departure from the university just as exam season started. But Concordia is playing hooky at the bargaining table for an exam invigilator collective agreement.
TRAC is throwing President Shepard a farewell street party outside Concordia’s GM building, and you’re invited! Let’s wish Alan well, but remind him to make sure Concordia is at negotiations before he goes.
Invigilators need a collective agreement to ensure that they have a living wage, workplace protections, and consistent health and safety. They were hoping this would be their last exam season without one.
At Western University, where Alan Shepard will become president next, invigilators are paid $20 an hour. Most invigilators are paid $12, the Quebec minimum wage, in exchange for their responsibility to ensure the integrity of every exam. Invigilators are mandated with upholding the university’s academic code of conduct, yet they are remunerated at the lowest rate allowable by law. Under Alan Shepard’s presidency, there has been no attempt to adequately value the work of these members of the Concordia community.
